U.S. Raises Tariff Threat Against Canada Following Talks With China

U.S. President Donald Trump warned this week that his administration could impose a 100 percent tariff on Canadian imports if Canada moves forward with expanded trade engagement with China, signaling a sharp rise in tensions between the two longtime allies.

The warning was issued in a social media post on Saturday following a recent visit to Beijing by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. During that trip, Canadian and Chinese officials reached agreements aimed at resolving specific trade disputes, including easing Chinese tariffs on certain Canadian agricultural products and addressing market access issues involving electric vehicles. Canadian officials have said the talks do not amount to a comprehensive free trade agreement.

Trump said the potential arrangement raised concerns that China could use Canada as a pathway to enter the U.S. market, a claim Canadian leaders have rejected. He warned that if such a deal proceeds, the United States would respond with sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods.

No executive order or formal policy action has been announced, and the White House has not released details on how such tariffs would be implemented.

Canadian officials pushed back on the remarks, emphasizing Canada’s right to pursue an independent trade policy while maintaining strong economic ties with the United States. The dispute adds to broader global trade tensions as Washington continues to take a harder line toward countries expanding economic engagement with Beijing.
