U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Wednesday, October 21, for scheduled talks with President Vladimir Putin as Washington continues efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
According to Reuters, two sources familiar with the visit confirmed Witkoff’s arrival in Russia’s second-largest city. The meeting follows discussions held Tuesday in Oslo, Norway, between Witkoff and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the Oslo meeting as positive and said Witkoff would share the results with Russian officials.
The visit brings the American envoy into direct discussions with both Ukrainian and Russian leadership on consecutive days, as diplomatic efforts continue to explore a possible resolution to the conflict.
St. Petersburg, Russia’s former imperial capital, is hosting the latest round of talks between American and Russian officials.
The war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, remains unresolved despite previous diplomatic efforts.
No new peace agreement has been announced, and the outcome of Witkoff’s discussions with Putin remains unclear.
